Harambee: let us all pull together.

At midnight on 11–12 December 1963, before a crowd of some quarter of a million in Nairobi, the Union Jack came down and the flag of Kenya went up. Jomo Kenyatta, the man the British had called "the leader to darkness and death", was now prime minister of an independent state, and he asked the settlers to stay. What followed was sixty-three years of argument over what freedom meant: a founding father's Harambee state, a one-party state and an attempted coup, election violence that killed more than a thousand people, the first annulment of a presidential election by a court in Africa, and a generation that read a Finance Bill clause by clause and marched.

Kenya: A Narrative History of Post-Colonial Leaders tells that story as a story — chronological, human and sourced. Five acts, named as the book names them: Mzee and the Harambee State, Nyayo, The Rainbow and the Fire, The Son, the Court and the Handshake, and The Hustler's Republic — to 30 September 2026, when President William Ruto and the industrialist Aliko Dangote broke ground at Lamu for the Dangote East African refinery.

Inside:

  • The deep past — stone tools made 3.3 million years ago at Lake Turkana, the stone towns of the Swahili coast, Fort Jesus, the Iron Snake railway, the White Highlands, Mau Mau and the Emergency, and the road to Uhuru
  • The national emblem — the Maasai shield and spears, the lions and the cockerel, Mount Kenya and the motto "Harambee", and an anthem set to a tune Pokomo mothers sang to their children
  • Five illustrated acts, from the midnight of independence to the groundbreaking at Lamu in September 2026 — Kenyatta's land purchase and Harambee schools, Moi's one-party state and the coup attempt of 1982, Kibaki's free primary schooling, the crisis of 2007 and the Constitution of 2010, Uhuru Kenyatta and Ruto before the International Criminal Court, the 47 county governments, Uhuru Kenyatta's railway, the annulment of 2017 and the handshake, Ruto's Finance Bill, the Gen Z rising, the police mission to Haiti and the death of Raila Odinga
  • The country beneath the presidents — tea, coffee and flowers, the land question, schools and clinics, a nation at prayer, M-Pesa, geothermal power from the Rift, the runners, Wangari Maathai, Ngũgĩ and the writers, elephants and ivory, and the safari economy
  • Kenyans in the world — Lupita Nyong'o, the first woman from Kenya to win the Oscar for best supporting actress, on 2 March 2014, for 12 Years a Slave; Barack Obama in Nairobi on 26 July 2015, "the first Kenyan-American to be President of the United States"; and US$5.04 billion sent home by Kenyans abroad in 2025, more than half of it from the United States
  • Verified quotes from Kenya's leaders, and 54 key-fact cards on the pages that carry no picture or quote
  • A chronology, a table of Kenya's six leaders (five presidents and the prime minister of the grand coalition), 74 source notes and a reader's guide of 119 entries — books, scholarly articles, reports and primary sources
  • Lessons in Leadership — what the country's best and worst moments teach those who lead, and an epilogue on the latest official data to September 2026 (Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, Central Bank of Kenya)
  • The recurring patterns — the land that never settles, elections as crises, "our turn to eat", railways and rule, the street as a check, and the handover habit

A clear, sourced introduction for anyone who wants to understand Kenya, East Africa, and how a country's presidents learned to leave.
